Default How often to take a complete week off?

Hello Lyle and everyone,

I posted last week about a injury I had. My forearm is still in pain, and it turns out I strained my pec major (came close to tearing it).

I am taking this whole week off from training. I figured I could still train my legs, but I figured if I'm taking off for my upper body perhaps it would make sense to take the whole week off for everything. Is this a good idea? How often do you recommend people take a complete week off from training, Lyle? And how many days exactly should someone take off, a week? 9 days? etc

I figure I will come back on Monday, and just start up with Push Ups instead of any chest pressing. My last day I trained upper was last Wednesday, so all together I'd be giving my upper body a walk and a half rest.

Based on what is written in the OP, I'd probably just take the whole week off from the weight room. Maintenance level cardio would be about it. Let your body heal.

As far as when to take them in general, it's hard to say. It depends on how well you pace yourself and many other factors.

What Lyle used to recommend, and what I still use, is 5 days COMPLETELY off every 10-12 weeks .

Even elite athletes take 1-2 weeks off every 6 months or so.

I like the idea of a full week off (really, 8-9 days including 1-2 days off from the preceding weekend) around the end of April and another sometime in August. Two weeks off at the end of the year. This leaves 3 blocks of about 16 weeks each, which can be divided up further.

Things actually work out like this approximately never.
