Default medical Weight Loss Diet? What is it exactly?

The new diet I have been seeing around the West coast being advertised by doctors is the "Medical Weight Loss Diet".

I have seen a few variations. One you eat shakes and soup and the other just protein products you buy from these guys: http://www.idealprotein.com/ipcl_usen.asp?no=215

Are these diets essentially PSMF?

I met a girl on the shake/soup version and she lost 100lbs and is low % bf now. I asked her nutrient intake was and she did not know.
She said she did not stall and others in her group did not stall either.

How do these people lose so much weight fast with out stalling?

Thanks
