Seriously. Try Whole Foods on bowery or whatever, Manhattan. Cray. Now I live in Seattle. Almost everything's marked up and organic in most supermarkets, regardless. Mostly. I buy a lot of asian produce. It's gnarly stuff. Certainly, not organic at all. Cheap and rare/interesting components to cook with, though. Some of these little asian markets really smell.
The grocery store situation in NYC is unique in a lot of ways including that WFM is cheaper than the normal grocery stores.
