Default So What Conditions Will Actually Affect Weight Loss To A Large Degree?

As stated many times and by studies pointed out by Lyle when people don't lose weight then it's that they are not in a calorie deficit either intentionally or not.

I get excuses all the time when clients are not losing weight.

Stress and sleep are 2 big ones. From what I understand these won't slow down weight loss but will make you hungrier. Possibly hold on to water.

However their are some situations where even in a deficit that people will not lose weight, or way slower than it should be.

There are 2 things that I have experienced that will affect weight loss pretty drastically and those are:

-low thyroid

Is there anything else that could be added to this list that I should consider before I call them out for inaccurate calorie counting/reporting?

Sorry but PCOS doesn't impair weight loss meaningfully as there are minima perturbations to energy expenditure.

Hypothyroid is excruciatingly rare.

Don't know why it needs to be a call out.

You could just approach it as coaching them for success.

-teach them how to weigh/measure/track
-make sure they have a digital food scale and know how to use it
-ask them to snap a pic with their cellphone of everything they put in their mouth for a week...could be a great way to catch "forgotten" food or underestimated portion sizes

If you come at it as "you are lying" most will just get defensive. Instead try "let's take a close look at what is going on so we can figure this out".

And if you give them the tools to accurately track their intake and then they still lie about it then at least they know they are lying and it isn't your fault they aren't making progress.
