Default Why doesn't anyone do hip flexor work?

Lyle,

I have noticed that most strength routines, either for bodybuilding or athletics, do not include work that directly addresses the hip flexors, such as the psoas. This is a major muscle group so I find this to be a curious omission and I was wondering why. Of course maybe a bodybuilder wouldn't care whether their psoas is ripped, but I would think that any athlete would be just as concerned with developing the psoas as any other major hip muscle. Do squats and deadlifts significantly strengthen the hip flexors in some way? I would guess not. Why are hip flexor exercises uncommon? Thanks.

Leg raises, situps with straight legs, dead-lifts, squats, lunges ect.

I'd say: nobody can see them (safe for the ones that are part of the quads) and they don't really help with anything, not even posture - rather, most people have these too tight already

I'm actually having a hard time thinking of a way to isolate the hip flexors. I'm admittedly not looking at an anatomy chart as I write this, but I'm not sure there's a way to hit the psoas without involving something else.

You can get a close approximation (abs will always work as a stabilizer of the pelvis) with some cable movements or the multi-hip machine. Your other leg actually ends up taking a huge brunt of the effort, mind you.

We actually used it quite a bit speed skating because the hip flexor drive during the push is part of what drives you forwards as you're pushing with the other leg. Only sport where it's like that though.

Lyle,

Yes, I can imagine that those exercises would strengthen the hip flexors. My question is why no one sees to do them for general athletic purposes. Wouldn't hip flexor strength be important for any athlete who wants to run fast?

Not in the least. Even for sprinters, the hip flexion that occurs is a reaction force from the pushoff. Not an active movement.

And it doesn't take much strength to lift the leg in that pattern. One might also argue (and I have seen Dan Pfaff argue this) that many of the warmup and drills that sprinters do (A's, B's, high knees) are to strengthen the muscles in that range anyhow. You don't need much more than that and overstrenthening/tightening the rectus or psoas can cause big time problems.
