Default Linear Progression

Can someone explain the science behind linear progression and why it's so effective? I know the method is tried and tested, but I would like to know the mechanisms at play in the body.

Why is it that starting off light and progressing to heavier weights workout to workout provides superior strength gains than just starting off heavy?
