Default High volume/Low Intensity for beginners?

I talked to an old competitive bodybuilding trainer yesterday. He told me that unless a beginner has a solid athletic base before starting weight training, he/she should start working out fullbody 3x but doing lots of volume with high reps (15-20) with lots of reps in the tank (4-5).

He asked me: "Would you start doing 100-meter sprints or 1500-meter races without being able to run at least a middle-paced 5K before? Then why do you believe you are going to be able to push your sets to failure or do a heavy 15-set workout without being able to move easy weights around for at least 1 hour?"

And it seemed to make sense. What do you think?

His beginner program is 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps with 1 minute rest and 4-5 reps left in the tank;

The exercises are (more or less):
  • Cable Row to abs
  • Cable Row to chest w/arms out
  • Lat pulldown
  • Dumbbell Pullover
  • Incline flys
  • Machine Bench Presses
  • Arnold Presses
  • Lat Raises
  • Cable Curls
  • Cable Triceps Pulldown
  • Leg Ext
  • Leg Curl
  • Standing Calf Raise
  • Crunches
  • Reverse Crunches

Lyle has a whole beginner article series. Do what's in those articles.
