How is muscle loss possible?
Hi guys, was just wondering how muscle loss is even possible for an individual embarking on a protein sparing modified fast without weight training (even if they are lean)? If by definition they are protein sparing why would someone who was sedentary and hasn't deliberately gained muscle mass through training, lose their muscle mass? Does this loss of "muscle mass" in caloric deficits merely refer to the compensatory increases in lean body mass as an adaptation to being a different/heavier weight. Sorry I'm just having a hard time understanding this as in a PSMF, protein intakes are meant to be sufficient for the gluconeogenesis process for the brain which would otherwise be drawn from endogenous protein stores (muscle/organs etc)? I am just curious as to why lean body mass is inevitable without training other than the aforementioned reason and to what degree? E.g 15%, 25%, 33% of total weight loss from lean body mass?
