Default 5 Hour Refeed always go surplus?

Hey,

I was wondering if when doing the 5 hour re-feeds, do you always need to go into a daily surplus? As in if you were doing "Leangains" style eating and re-feeding at night do you have to go past your maintenance calories for the positive effects, or can you just eat higher carb and lower fat than your rest days and stay in a small deficit.

Yes go above maintenance.
