Default Surplus Calories at the Start of a Routine

Quick question.

Starting over again so basically use a total noob for this scenario... very low LBM and high bodyfat like 25% or so.

For the first month or so since Im making mostly neural adaptations instead of gaining muscle should i even be eating at a surplus at all?

Normally i convince myself ive gotta eat more b/c im lifting and i end up just blowing up to impossibly fat then its hard to get back down to lean before summer.

I'm thinking ~1g of protein per lb of bodyweight then low fat and medium carbs somewhere at or maybe slightly below (no more than ~500 cal below) maintenance each day should be fine for at least the first month, if not two months?

Thank you Lyle. This website is a game changer once you understand the mechanisms behind fat loss/muscle gain.

Just get on a normal diet like in the Baseline series. At 25% BF I would push a 1k daily deficit (with diet and cardio) for a bit if it were me. Don’t overthink this more than that and focus on consistency.

Okay, you don't think 1,000 calorie daily deficit (particularly on workout days) is too large for strength gains & Recovery?

I just dont want to make the mistake i made two years ago where i was obsessed with getting to 10-12% bodyfat but by the time i got there i had like no muscle so it didnt look nearly as good as i anticipated.
