Smile Blood Pressure and Sodium?

Hi, Everyone,

I'm new to the forum, so if I'm posting something that has already been answered just point me in the right direction. I went to the doctor today because I have an upper respiratory infection. She was concerned because my blood pressure was high today. She said that it wasn't high the last time that I saw her. Is there a way to do this diet and still keep my blood pressure under control?

I'm not on any medication for blood pressure. However, High BP does run in my family and my weight is an issue. I thought that my bp may be high because I'm sick. I was advised to lower my sodium intake and cut back on caffeine.

My BP was 140/100 when I started the appointment and 130/90 by the time I left.

<sigh> Did the doctor advise that with a robotic, haven't learned anything since medical school, voice?

1) Having a slightly elevated BP in the doctor's office is called "normal".
2) Having a slightly elevated BP when sick is called "normal".
3) Most cases of actual hypertension are NOT sodium responsive.
4) Most people tolerate caffeine with NO significant elevation of BP.
5) Overweight. Elevated BP. Duh.
6) Your doctor sucks.

If I were you, this is what I would do. Get an inexpensive automatic BP cuff. Here's one example:

Check your BP first thing in the am for a week when not sick. If it's high, change one thing. Reduce salt or eliminate caffeine. Not both. Keep checking for a week. You'll figure out if either is the problem.

Lose the excess weight. Monitor how BP responds.

With a family history, you may have essential hypertension. Next time, pick better parents.
