Default Upper body training with shoulder instability?

Any recs as far as upper body training for those of us with shoulder instability?

Bench press and ohp makes my shoulder a grindy mess. No significant pain, but I can't afford to let it get to that point in the future. Do not have time for PT right now.

Am I right in thinking machines would serve me best?
